Seven must-try restaurants during Pasadena Cheeseburger Week
"According to city officials, and a plaque, one of the world's most famous dishes started in Pasadena when, more than 100 years ago, a careless teenager accidentally invented the cheeseburger. "The cheeseburger is a legacy here in Pasadena and this is a nice way to focus on Pasadena restaurants," said Paul Little, president and chief executive officer of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, which honors the simple but ubiquitous dish every year with Cheeseburger Week."
"The city is the fitting location for this celebration since according to Little and other published reports, the cheeseburger was invented in 1924 by Lionel Sternberger, a teenager who was flipping burgers at his father's restaurant called The Rite Spot. It happened when he accidentally burned a hamburger patty and didn't want to get in trouble, so instead of throwing it away he tried to hide his mistake by putting a piece of cheese on the meat."
Pasadena claims the invention of the cheeseburger in 1924 when Lionel Sternberger, a teenager flipping burgers at his father's restaurant The Rite Spot, accidentally melted cheese onto a burned patty to hide the mistake. The city honors the cheeseburger with an annual Cheeseburger Week from Jan. 25-31, involving about 40 restaurants offering special deals. The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce promotes the event as a way to focus on local restaurants and celebrates the cheeseburger's global popularity. Participating venues include Dog Haus Biergarten, which offers a Haus Burger on a King's Hawaiian roll, and El Portal among other burger joints and restaurants.
