"The Bay Area restaurant started life in the late 1800s as the site of the San Francisco Yacht Club. For decades, it was home to the yacht club's events and galas, but when the group moved in the 1920s, the building turned into a jazz club. The Trident transformed into a true Bay Area landmark in 1960 when it came under the ownership of the famed folk band the Kingston Trio. As the counterculture movement thrived in San Francisco, the spot was renamed the Trident."
"Among its many famous patrons during that time were the Rolling Stones, Joan Baez, Clint Eastwood and Jerry Garcia; Janis Joplin came so often she had a regular table. The Trident was a "musical entertainment venue, natural foods restaurant and the place to hang out," the restaurant's website read. During one visit by the Stones, Trident bartender Bobby Lazoff made his signature cocktail for Keith Richards. The combination of tequila, orange juice and grenadine, called a tequila sunrise, became a sensation."
The Trident closed on New Year's Eve after 127 years on the Sausalito waterfront. The site began in the late 1800s as home to the San Francisco Yacht Club and became a jazz club in the 1920s. The Kingston Trio purchased the property in 1960 and the venue was renamed the Trident as the counterculture era flourished. The restaurant hosted many famous patrons and became known for bartender Bobby Lazoff's tequila sunrise. Recent years saw a failed sale, unpaid rent, rising costs and diminished tourist traffic, leaving the property's future and its muraled ceiling uncertain at 558 Bridgeway.
