Big Bear Lake will host a three-day In-N-Out Burger Tough Mudder Challenge Friday, Sept. 5 through Sunday, Sept. 7 at the Bear Mountain ski resort, coinciding with Oktoberfest's opening weekend at the Big Bear Convention Center. The fundraiser benefits Slave 2 Nothing, founded by Lynsi Snyder-Ellingson and Sean Ellingson, and features 5K and 10K courses produced by Tough Mudder. Big Bear Lake is a city of about 5,000 people surrounding a 2,971-acre reservoir with 22 miles of shoreline. Visitors can boat from several marinas, tour the Big Bear Queen or Pirate Ship, shop and dine in the Village, and hear live music at venues like Barrel 33. September weather is generally mild but the region faces fire and thunderstorm hazards that have previously prompted closures and evacuations.

The German-themed beer festival is the big thing between summer and winter activities at Big Bear Lake.
