Italy's Christmas markets: Where and when to visit in 2025
"Just over an hour's drive from Verona is the small town of Asiago, made famous by Asiago cheese. Asiago's Christmas markets transform three city squares Piazza Carli, Piazza Duomo and Piazza II Risorgimento with traditional wooden huts twinkling in lights. Craft-lovers will find a wide selection of handmade objects and decorations, while children will be able to venture into Santa's grotto. In November, the market is open only on the weekends. It will be open every day from December 6th to January 6th."
"Though it sits in the heart of Tuscany, Arezzo's 'Tyrolese' Christmas fair pays tribute to Alto Adige's Alpine markets. Artisans and gastronomers from South Tyrol, Austria and Germany will be in attendance, selling traditional crafts and foods, including filled pretzels, spatzle, polenta, dumplings, raclette and ham hock, as well as Tyrolese beers. The fair in Piazza Grande features a festive light show, with animated Christmas images projected onto the walls of the historic buildings surrounding the market square. The market is open Thursdays through Sundays."
North Italy embraces the holidays with traditional Christmas markets that often rival those of neighbouring Switzerland and Austria. Wooden chalets, Tyrol-themed fairs, festive light shows and regional foods create varied seasonal experiences. Visitors can sip mulled wine amid snow-capped mountains, feast on pretzels, spatzle, raclette and ham hock, and enjoy family attractions such as Santa's grotto. Asiago's market runs November 8 to January 6 across Piazza Carli, Piazza Duomo and Piazza II Risorgimento, showcasing handmade crafts and daily openings from December 6. Arezzo's Tyrolese fair runs November 15 to December 28 in Piazza Grande with artisans and animated projections.
