It Just Got A Little Harder To Find Foie Gras In DC
Briefly

Harvey's Market has stopped selling foie gras after a lawsuit by Animal Outlook. This was prompted by claims that the market misrepresented foie gras's sourcing as humane. Only one DC retailer, La Jambe, currently sells foie gras, while several restaurants continue to serve it. Foie gras production typically involves force-feeding birds, leading to severe health issues. The lawsuit asserts that Harvey's labeled its products as 'humanely raised' despite sourcing from force-fed ducks. Animal Outlook previously urged the market to correct its advertising, but after receiving no response, they pursued legal action.
"Foie gras is typically produced by force-feeding ducks or geese to engorge the birds' livers up to ten times their natural size, often inducing organ failure."
"It's one of the most barbaric practices within animal farming, which is saying a lot," says Ben Williamson, the executive director of Animal Outlook.
"Harvey's Market labeled its glass display case with the words 'humanely raised' and 'free range,' but the lawsuit alleges that the market sourced its liver from ducks that were force-fed and kept inside."
"According to the lawsuit, a sticker on the butcher's display case said the foie gras came from Hudson Valley, where both commercial producers allegedly force-feed their ducks."
