Italy has introduced various frozen desserts such as gelato, sorbetto, semifreddo, and granita, with influences seen in the U.S. Granita, originally a Sicilian treat made from shaved snow, fruit syrups, and citrus, evolved over centuries into a balanced icy delicacy. Italian ice, often mistaken for granita, was created in America by Sicilian immigrant Caterina DiCosmo as a smoother, more ice cream-like version. While Italian ice shares similar elements with granita, it has unique characteristics that make it distinctively American with its creamy consistency and texture variations.
Granita is an ancient Sicilian treat originally made with shaved snow, fruit syrups and citrus... Eventually, they swapped the snow for sweetened water and it became a balanced, icy treat.
Technically, Italian ice should be called Italian American ice... Caterina DiCosmo, a Sicilian immigrant, was craving granita so she did her best and created Italian ice.
