"It's a weekend morning on the West Coast, and a young Alan Hsu is in the kitchen with his sister, flipping omelets. As a PBS cooking show plays on a nearby screen, the pair attempts to mirror the technique of the professionals without waking their family. In similar fashion, miles south, a young Sarah Cooper spends her childhood moments side-by-side with her grandmother in the kitchen, bright-eyed and curious, as she watches her make biscuits."
"I like the idea of contrast and differences, Hsu said. I think it can be applied in a lot of different ways in our lives, like how Sarah's a baker and I'm a chef. I think in general, meeting points in all sorts of areas in the world, from like ocean to land, or our crafts, that's where interesting things can happen. At that intersection."
Alan Hsu and Sarah Cooper developed early cooking rituals and formal culinary training that propelled them into international careers. They crossed paths at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a two-Michelin-star restaurant engaged with sustainable agriculture and forward-thinking food ideas. They now operate Sun Moon Studio, a Michelin-starred restaurant rooted in California cuisine that emphasizes contrast in flavor, design, and roles. Hsu concentrates on savory preparations while Cooper focuses on bread and pastries, and the nondescript, studio-sized space delivers bold flavors and lively after-service energy. Sun Moon Studio is located at 1940 Union St., Suite 21, Oakland, open Thursday to Sunday evenings with reservations on OpenTable.
