Famed SF chef takes a chance on Lake Tahoe and reimagines mountain dining
"Last Sunday, after a weekend of skiing in Lake Tahoe, I headed west and traversed mountainous scenic roads so whimsical every turn felt like a drive through Dr. Suess' Whoville. I walked a quarter of a mile along a snowy path passing ski lodges, crossed a little bridge, made a right at a yellow house and finally arrived at one of the most highly anticipated restaurants to debut in the tiny town of Norden, maybe ever."
"Sugar Bowl, the historic ski resort that began a massive, $100 million renovation in 2025, distinguishes itself from other popular Tahoe resorts with its secluded appeal on Donner Summit - it's at a higher base elevation than the nearby resorts, at 6,800 feet - and more affluent visitors, including San Francisco venture capitalists. Austrian skier Hannes Schroll founded Sugar Bowl in 1939 with the financial backing of Walt Disney. Before long, it became known as an exclusive getaway for Hollywood stars like Charlie Chaplin."
Yarrow is a new restaurant at Sugar Bowl Resort in Norden led by consulting chef Traci Des Jardins. The restaurant can be reached by a snowy quarter-mile path from nearby lodges or via a scenic gondola accessed from a separate parking lot. Sugar Bowl began a $100 million renovation in 2025 and promotes a secluded, higher-elevation experience on Donner Summit at 6,800 feet. The resort was founded in 1939 by Austrian skier Hannes Schroll with Walt Disney's financial backing and became an exclusive Hollywood and Bay Area getaway, attracting affluent visitors and well-to-do season-pass holders.
