Chaat Dog Rolls Out Bold Flavors in Prospect Heights
"I made a bhel puri chaat - a classic with puffed rice, sweet, sour, spicy, chutneys and veggies - and spooned it over the hot dogs, and named it Ring My Bhel. It was a huge hit and it won the People's Favorite,"
"You'll find chaat on every street corner in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, sold in carts just like hot dogs here."
"Chaat comes in many different forms, but what unifies them is a mix of salty, sweet, spicy, tart, and crunchy elements - usually a starchy base of puffed rice, fritters, or samosa, topped with diced onions, tomatoes, or boiled potatoes, layered with a tangy chutney, a dusting of chaat masala, and crispy toppings like fried chickpeas. "It's that combination of flavors that makes a chaat," said Shallwani."
Pervaiz Shallwani created Chaat Dog by topping Vienna Beef hot dogs with chaat preparations, first serving "Ring My Bhel" in a 2017 backyard cookoff and winning People's Favorite. He grew up in Chicago with Pakistani parents and connects chaat street-cart culture in South Asia to American hot dog tradition. Chaat blends salty, sweet, spicy, tart, and crunchy elements, built on puffed rice or fried bases with chutneys, chaat masala, and crispy toppings. Shallwani left CNN in July 2022 to freelance and piloted chaat dogs in Chicago, Toronto, and Hudson before opening a permanent seven-day location at Beer Street South in Prospect Heights.
