Borough Broth raises 7.5m from Piper to accelerate expansion as demand surges
""We won't have to aggressively recruit - we'll make up the difference with automation," she said. "We won't be losing staff, but we don't want to add a huge amount more.""
""The data shows people want to recognise the ingredients in a product and feel they could make it at home," she said. "That has always been my rule - whatever we use has to be something you could use in your own kitchen. No shortcuts.""
Borough Broth secured £7.5 million from Piper, giving the investor a one-third stake and valuing the company at £19.5 million. Founder Ros Heathcote retains just over 40% and Duncan Jones owns around 6%. The capital will fund a 27,500 sq ft production facility near the existing Greenford site and introduce greater automation to offset rising recruitment costs. The company employs 50 staff, has doubled sales after listings in Tesco and Sainsbury's, and expects revenues of £11.5 million this year. The brand uses about 20 tonnes of British-sourced bones weekly and benefits from consumer shifts away from ultra-processed foods. January is its busiest period as customers seek broths for winter cooking and healthier eating.
