Birds of Paradise, a travel-inspired cocktail bar at the Charles River Speedway in Brighton, permanently closed after its last day of service on Friday, Oct. 31. The bar opened in 2022 by Ran Duan, who previously operated The Baldwin Bar, Blossom Bar, and C-Side Bar; Duan's Brookline restaurant Ivory Pearl closed in March 2024. Birds of Paradise offered globally inspired cocktails with destination-themed drinks such as "Chengdu, China" using Empirical Cilantro spirit and Ming River baijiu. Duan transferred oversight of Birds of Paradise to two longtime colleagues. An ongoing police investigation into a woman's death at Duan's home on New Year's Day has been reported; no charges have been filed.
