"I like to say cookies are hugs you can eat. And I think everyone, especially right now in Altadena, we can all use hugs."
"Baking and feeding people is how we show affection. And so one of the hardest facets [of the fire], especially the early aftermath, was both of us had the impulse to feed our community or help. To not be able to do that was really devastating."
"Building out a bakery is a big investment in your community. We love Altadena. It never crossed our minds to not come home or not rebuild."
Michelle Taylor and Jessica Christopher founded Altadena Cookie Co. as a pandemic-era cottage business that rapidly expanded into a full-scale cookie operation. The pair planned to open a brick-and-mortar in January 2025 when the Eaton Fire destroyed Taylor’s home and most of their baking equipment. The loss temporarily prevented them from feeding their community, a core way they express affection. Despite personal and business rebuilding challenges, the bakery reopened in November offering classic cookies and buttery creations. Taylor and Christopher frost and decorate every cookie themselves and remain committed to rebuilding and serving Altadena.
