A Cozy Korean American Bistro Lands in Sawtelle With Fried Chicken and Jjigae
"Curtis quickly caught on to what we were trying to do, and we worked together in our home,"
"We thought the Mulberry would be the right time, place, and right reasons to open in Sawtelle, since it is central for those displaced from the fires,"
"I've been thinking about and studying Korean food for over 30 years,"
"I asked myself what the Korean version of a Hillstone would look like? But the Mulberry has its own life. I'm excited about what we created."
The Mulberry opened November 12 in the former Plan Check Sawtelle space as a Korean American bistro owned by Jennifer Chon and David Lee. Chef Curtis Park leads the kitchen, offering updated takes on classic, homey Korean dishes paired with cocktails. The restaurant name references hanji, the durable Korean paper made from mulberry bark. Chon and Lee met Park early in 2025 at Hermanito and developed the concept together, sketching notes and a mood board. The couple relocated after losing their Palisades home in the fires and cooked with Park in their temporary residence. David Lee draws on decades studying Korean food and restaurant business experience.
