"Coca-Cola isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and we can say that with a fair amount of confidence. In fact, if you love a standard glass of Coke or Diet Coke, you'll probably find it on grocery shelves and menus for a very long time yet. But if you adore one of Coca-Cola's flavored spin-offs, we can't guarantee it will stick around with the same confidence."
"But the soda giant has been trying to change that for a while. In the 1980s, after learning that many Southerners were reaching for an ice cold glass of Coke on a hot morning, Coca-Cola tried to market its fizzy, sugary drink as a breakfast must-have to the masses. It worked for a few years, but it didn't last. So Coca-Cola tried again."
Coca-Cola has dominated the soft drink market since 1886 and its flagship beverage is sold in nearly every country, with only North Korea, Cuba, and Russia as exceptions. The U.S. consumes nearly 40 billion liters annually. Classic Coca-Cola and Diet Coke remain widely available, but many flavored spin-offs have been launched and later discontinued, including Coca-Cola Spiced, Cherry Vanilla, and Twisted Mango. Multiple attempts to combine coffee with cola occurred over decades, from 1980s breakfast marketing to Coca-Cola BlāK in the early 2000s (discontinued in 2008) and Coca-Cola With Coffee released internationally in 2018 and in the U.S. in 2020.
