"The standard time for Broadway intermissions ranges between 15 and 20 minutes, long enough to stretch your legs, maybe grab a snack, and hit the washroom. An entire year? Why, that's more than enough time for all of that and more, including forgetting some of the most important plot points and character machinations of any sort of spectacle, even the major ones."
"That it was hard to know what any of these people really wanted (even if they did sing about that stuff a lot) and that Oz as a location felt far too flat, lifeless, and confusing. The smaller ones, too: "Odd missteps, hinky plotholes, and confounding questions," many of them about the very nature of magic in this world. I made sure to note the things I did enjoy, particularly the performances of both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, plus some whimsically mounted musical sequences."
Wicked: For Good is the second film in a planned two-film adaptation and largely repeats the first film's mix of flaws and strengths. The production continues to suffer from unclear character desires, flat and confusing worldbuilding of Oz, odd plot holes, and ambiguous magical rules. Standout elements include Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, whose chemistry, deep mutual respect, and singing anchor the film and keep it emotionally engaging. Some musical sequences retain whimsical charm, and certain elements improve slightly, but the overall shortcomings remain significant across the extended running time.
