Casting directors are vital to film and TV productions, yet often misunderstood. During a panel at Vidiots, industry veterans discussed their collaborative approach with actors, emphasizing the passion behind their work. Josh Yanklewitz, an experienced casting director, highlighted how research into South Asian history enriched the casting for Hulu's 'Deli Boys.' Danielle Aufiero shared the advantages of having numerous talented performers, as seen in the global search for a star in 'Good American Family.' Both highlighted their role in supporting actor success and dispelling myths about casting.
“There are so many misconceptions,” said Yanklewitz about the business of casting. An industry veteran with credits on “New Girl,” “Black Hawk Down,” and more, Yanklewitz said casting directors are not inherently mean and are always rooting for actors.
“We want you to be successful, and we know how to get actors jobs,” he said. This highlights the collaborative nature of casting directors who diligently support actors and their careers.
“You want the embarrassment of riches,” agreed Danielle Aufiero, explaining how having an abundance of talent allows directors to make the best choices for their productions.
Representing the docudrama 'Good American Family,' Aufiero explained how the show's search for its star was enhanced by the wide variety of options they considered.
