A film adaptation of the musical Merrily We Roll Along, directed by Richard Linklater, will not be completed until 2039. However, a live capture of the Broadway revival, directed by Maria Friedman and featuring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez, will be released in theaters on December 5. This revival follows three best friends through their relationships over several decades and won multiple Tony Awards, setting box office records after its Off-Broadway transfer. The show originally premiered on Broadway in 1981.
"This is a show that makes demands of its audience, perhaps sometimes unreasonable ones," Time Out New York's Adam Feldman wrote in his five-star review. "But as Charley sings during a loving argument with his friends: 'What's the point of demands you can meet?'"
Merrily We Roll Along opened on Broadway on October 10, 2023, and closed July 7, 2024, after extending its run.
