The Bride! review: Jessie Buckley let down by shoddy writing and toneless direction in ugly, irritating film
"When Frank (Christian Bale), a monster created in a lab, arrives in 1920s Chicago looking for a mad scientist to make him a bride, the last thing he expects is to become involved in a nationwide police hunt. That's exactly what happens after Dr Euphronius (Annette Bening) revives Ida (Jessie Buckley), a murder victim with no filter and no memory."
"Overwritten and wildly overacted, The Bride! is full of ideas, but the shouty and showy execution lacks discipline and depth. Hard to watch and difficult to follow, it's an ugly, irritating film, the kind that makes good performers look bad."
The Bride! follows Frank, a monster created in a laboratory, who arrives in 1920s Chicago seeking a mad scientist to create him a bride. Dr Euphronius revives Ida, a murder victim with no memory, and the two become entangled in a nationwide police hunt. The pair flee across the country, pursuing movie stars and evading detectives while the spirit of Mary Shelley appears throughout. The film attempts to blend multiple genres and ideas but suffers from overwritten dialogue, excessive acting, and inconsistent direction. Despite featuring talented performers, the execution lacks discipline and coherence, resulting in a confusing and difficult viewing experience.
