Indeed, the 'January movie' sometimes has its own, brazen essence: It knows it's going to be an also-ran, as Hollywood goes from worrying about holiday box office to worrying about Sundance to worrying about Oscar.
But January is also when we sometimes see the best foreign films of the year - which don't need a theatrical release to qualify for the Oscars, and thus often hold their release dates until right around the time nominations are announced.
