Sydney Sweeney explains being 'nervous' to play lesbian boxer Christy Martin
""I have to admit, at first I was very nervous, because, I mean, she's right there, and I'm portraying her. She is such an inspiring, incredible woman, and I wanted to do justice by her. So first I was really nervous," she admitted."
""But then, after you spend time with Christy, and you get to know her and you're close with her, you want her around all the time. I kept texting her, 'When are you going to come visit? When are you going to come back?' I loved having her presence there.""
Sydney Sweeney stars as Christy Martin in Christy, directed by David Michôd. The film follows Martin’s rise through the 1990s boxing scene, her career pinnacle, and the subsequent decline that intensified physical and emotional abuse from her husband and manager, Jim, who was 25 years her senior. The story includes Martin’s later coming out as a lesbian and her 2017 marriage to former rival Lisa Holewyne, portrayed by Katy O'Brian. Martin compiled a 49–10 professional record and was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. Martin’s involvement in production initially made Sweeney nervous, but close time together fostered mutual rapport.
