Surreal, dazzling visuals form an Iranian expat's tribute to defiance back home | Aeon Videos
Briefly

In 2022, Iran experienced widespread protests after the death of Jina (Mahsa) Amini while in police custody over hijab laws. Filmmaker Atefeh Khademolreza, inspired by these events and the suspicious death of her friend Amin, created the animated short film Meteor. Utilizing a rotoscope animation technique, she captures the essence of protests across Iran, illustrating acts of defiance and resilience, particularly highlighting women's and LGBTQ+ struggles. The film serves as a poignant tribute to Amin and addresses the intertwining themes of personal loss and societal rebellion.
In 'Meteor,' Khademolreza masterfully uses rotoscope animation to blend personal grief with the larger social upheaval in Iran, all sparked by Amini's death.
The film reflects the profound struggle for freedom among women and the LGBTQ+ community in Iran, linked to Khademolreza’s own experiences of loss.
