Star of iconic TV show 'Father Knows Best' dies at 80
"After a long, hard-fought battle over the past five years, the time has come. My mother, Lauren Chapin, passed away from her battle with cancer tonight. I'm at a complete loss for words right now."
"It was very difficult to understand how Kathy Anderson could be loved and protected and Lauren Chapin lived a whole different kind of life. I didn't understand how God could let me suffer."
"Chapin later revealed that her real-life childhood was marked by trauma and instability. She said her mother struggled with alcoholism and that she was molested by her father after being left in his care as a young child. By age 11, she described herself as a 'manic depressive personality' and said she had attempted suicide."
Lauren Chapin, born May 23, 1945, in Los Angeles, passed away at age 80 following a prolonged cancer battle. She gained fame as a child actress playing Kathy 'Kitten' Anderson on the beloved sitcom 'Father Knows Best,' which ran for six seasons from 1954 to 1960. Her career included appearances in the 1954 film 'A Star Is Born' alongside Judy Garland and various television films and stage productions. She reprised her role in television reunions of the sitcom. Her brothers Billy and Michael were also child actors. Later in life, Chapin revealed her childhood involved significant trauma, including parental alcoholism, abuse, and early mental health struggles.
