"The Sony Pictures live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will be exclusive to Netflix following its theatrical run, Netflix and Sony Pictures have announced as part of a larger deal. The Netflix / Sony deal is a multi-year "Pay-1" agreement that begins this year. The Zelda movie was singled out in Netflix's announcement as some of the first SPE movies that will come to Netflix. Others include The Nightingale, Buds, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-verse, and the new Beatles movies from director Sam Mendes."
"The Zelda movie is not Nintendo's next movie, as the company is re-teaming with Illumination for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in 2026 after the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. The Zelda movie follows in 2027. And after that, Nintendo is set to produce even more movies as part of its plan to release a steady cadence of movies over time."
Netflix and Sony Pictures agreed to a multi-year Pay-1 deal beginning this year that gives Netflix exclusive streaming rights to select Sony Pictures Entertainment releases after their theatrical windows. The agreement includes films such as The Nightingale, Buds, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-verse, the new Beatles movies, and Sony's live-action The Legend of Zelda. Deadline reported Sony considered Amazon before choosing Netflix, and a $7 billion value has been reported but remains unconfirmed. The Zelda film stars Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, is filming in New Zealand, and is produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, directed by Wes Ball.
