Sinners Consultant Dolly Li Explains Inclusion of Chinese Delta Community
Briefly

In a recent interview, Ryan Coogler revealed how his family, particularly his Uncle James, and his father-in-law's heritage, influenced his work in 'Wakanda Forever' and his upcoming film 'Sinners.' Drawing inspiration from blues music, Coogler reflects on the emotions intertwined with his uncle’s passing. Additionally, Dolly Li highlighted Coogler's commitment to cultural authenticity, explaining how his father-in-law's Chinese Delta ancestry shaped significant characters in 'Sinners,' set during the Jim Crow era, demonstrating a rich connection between personal history and storytelling.
Ryan and I first connected last year because he discovered my Mississippi Delta Chinese doc for AJ+ and was inspired to include the community in Sinners after his father-in-law learned that he had Delta Chinese ancestors.
Ryan could've made the store owners white or black and nobody would've batted an eye, but to insist on including them—which has resurfaced this doc & history—now that is camaraderie.
