"I was exhausted. I basically had a breakdown, to put it bluntly, and I kind of hid. I just sort of unraveled,"
"I started reading a lot, doing therapy, and started my journey into self-discovery."
"What's difficult about this industry and about being an actor and about being a people pleaser within this industry is I really care about what people think and I was always looking for reassurance,"
"I lost sight of who I was and what made me happy. I was always trying to impress people, please other people, but I wasn't really happy in myself."
Sam Claflin experienced a breakdown last year while juggling consecutive productions, moving house, and a post-divorce breakup, which prompted deep personal change. Algorithms served him self-help books that he began reading as part of a new routine that included therapy and reflection. He took a nine-month hiatus from work to focus on mental health and to rediscover his identity beyond pleasing others. Claflin describes caring deeply about external reassurance, losing sight of what made him happy, and previously forcing himself to emulate his older brothers rather than being himself.
