"Queer Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has become the first Black woman to earn a second Golden Globe nomination for Lead Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Erivo has been nominated for her performance as Elphaba in Wicked: For Good, released in November. Last year, she was nominated for the first film in the two-part series, Wicked. She lost to Demi Moore, who won for her role in The Substance."
"Erivo is one of several queer members of the Wicked & Wicked: For Good cast, including gay actor Jonathan Bailey, who plays Fiyero, Elphaba's love interest. Both Erivo and her co-star, Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda in the films, have continuously celebrated the Oz universe for its queerness. A clip from last November shows an interviewer asking Grande and Erivo about the queer allegories in the first film, which is based on the long-running Broadway musical."
Cynthia Erivo earned a Golden Globe nomination for Lead Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked: For Good, becoming the first Black woman to receive a second nomination in that category. She was previously nominated for the first Wicked film and lost last year to Demi Moore. The current nominees include Amanda Seyfried, Chase Infiniti, Emma Stone, Kate Hudson, and Rose Byrne. The Wicked films include several queer cast members and intentionally celebrate queerness, otherness, and fan interpretations of character relationships.
