Protesters at Scream 7 Premiere Call for 'Free Palestine'
"A group of about 25 protesters gathered outside of the film's premiere at the Paramount Studios lot on February 25 to advocate for a Free Palestine in an ongoing boycott of the film in support of Melissa Barrera, who was fired from the project in November 2023 over Instagram posts deemed "antisemitic" by Spyglass Media Group."
"On the red carpet, Scream 7 director Kevin Williamson said that his "heart goes out" to those calling for a boycott. "I don't know if canceling Paramount+ is the way [...] But I think people should listen to their inner self and do what feels good for them," he added."
"The once-locked Letterboxd posts, however, won't be able to save Scream 7 from its middling reviews, which mostly take issue with the way the film seems to be loosely strung together after both its other star and original director departed the project."
Scream 7 encountered significant controversy surrounding its premiere and release. Approximately 25 protesters gathered at the Paramount Studios premiere on February 25 to advocate for Palestine and boycott the film in support of Melissa Barrera, who was fired in November 2023 over Instagram posts deemed antisemitic. Director Kevin Williamson expressed sympathy for the boycott while suggesting people follow their conscience. Additional criticism emerged regarding Letterboxd's locked reviews feature, though this practice mirrors other films and prevents review-bombing. Critics also objected to partnerships with betting app Kalshi and Meta AI. Despite these controversies, the film is tracking for potentially the franchise's strongest opening weekend.
