River Gallo spent nearly a decade developing Ponyboi, starring as the lead character, an intersex, Latinx sex worker in New Jersey. The film intertwines autobiographical elements, including Gallo's own experiences of being intersex and facing medical interventions as a child. The narrative follows Ponyboi, who is entangled with a drug-dealing pimp and faces challenges that echo Gallo's complex relationship with their own father. The gritty setting and character development reflect Gallo's roots and provide a raw depiction of resilience and struggle.
"It has proven to be very challenging at times, just like the autobiographical nature of some elements of the movie," Gallo explains, referencing personal experiences woven into the narrative.
Ponyboi, which takes its name from the 1992 Bruce Springsteen song, stars Gallo as the titular lead, an intersex, Latinx sex worker living in New Jersey.
