Meta said the company did not intend to suggest it had officially partnered with the MPA or gone through its ratings process, and it said it never made that claim. The tech giant simply drew inspiration from the movie industry, it said."
The Motion Picture Association demanded that Instagram stop using the PG-13 movie rating label to describe its teen content policies and sent a cease-and-desist letter to Meta. MPA lawyer Naresh Kilaru said the organization earned public trust in its rating system and warned that dissatisfaction with Meta's automated classifications would undermine that trust. Kilaru called Meta's advertising claims that teen accounts would be "guided by" PG-13 standards "literally false and highly misleading" and described PG-13 as a registered certification mark owned by the MPA. Meta said it drew inspiration from movie ratings, did not claim an official partnership, and framed the change as supporting parents.
