Memo to Distributors: Buy These 2025 Fall Festival Movies
"Plenty of films go into Venice, Telluride, and Toronto with North American distribution already in place, particularly when you have the backing of a distributor like Netflix (which had four world premieres this fall) or Focus Features (which brought the house down with the likes of " Hamnet" and " Bugonia "). But with more than 300 features premiering at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, and a swath at Venice, Telluride, and now headed for New York, many venture in without distribution support."
"An exasperated primary school teacher played by Saoirse Ronan spontaneously abducts her most disruptive student and locks the boy to a wall in her basement with the help of a harness that she found on the internet by googling "how to live with an 800lb. gorilla" - but instead of being upset, everyone in the post-English town where she lives is thrilled that the problem child is gone."
More than 300 features premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, alongside sizable slates at Venice and Telluride, with many heading next to New York. Some films enter festivals with North American distribution already secured by companies such as Netflix and Focus Features. A large number of films premiere without distribution and therefore remain without a U.S. release, including some acclaimed at Sundance. Only a small proportion of festival titles quickly secure homes; others wait as buyers weigh investment against potential box-office returns and awards prospects. Several fall festival films, including Jonatan Etzler's Bad Apples starring Saoirse Ronan, seek distribution.
