Marvel Star Reveals Sleeping Dogs Movie Milestone
"Sleeping Dogs was set in Hong Kong, and it followed an undercover police officer named Wei Shen as he infiltrated the Triad and attempted to destroy it from the inside. If the movie goes forward, Liu will likely portray Shen. Donnie Yen was signed to star in the film in 2017 during a previous attempt to adapt the story. That version was reportedly going to shoot in 2022, but it ultimately didn't come to pass. Yen confirmed that he is no longer involved with the project in January of this year."
"Liu shared the news of his involvement shortly after that, and added that he doesn't just want to make a movie. He also wants "a sequel game for everyone." While there was never a direct sequel, a Sleeping Dogs spin-off called Triad Wars was in development before it was canceled during its beta. The game's developer, United Front Games, was closed in 2016."
"it's the studios that don't seem to understand how important this IP is. BUT we will get them there."
Simu Liu is attached to a film adaptation of the 2012 action-adventure game Sleeping Dogs, and the project now has a new draft of the script. An accompanying image of Liu's sleeping dog was shared with the update. Square Enix is described as supportive, while some studios reportedly do not yet grasp the IP's importance. The original game follows Wei Shen, an undercover Hong Kong police officer infiltrating the Triad; Liu is likely to portray Shen if the film proceeds. Donnie Yen was previously attached to an earlier adaptation attempt but is no longer involved. United Front Games closed in 2016 and a planned spin-off, Triad Wars, was canceled during its beta.
