Madrid's growing popularity as a filming location: More benefits for the city, more grief for the residents
"On Pelayo street, in Madrid's trendy neighborhood of Chueca, the production company left a letter-size sheet of paper stuck to a plastic fence alerting residents to the fact that on the night of June 17 and 18 there would be a film shoot in the area. At 8.30 p.m. on the 18th, there were more than 40 people filling 100 meters of sidewalk as they prepared to start shooting, while the actors, already in makeup and wardrobe, chatted in a circle."
"Madrid wants to consolidate its position as a benchmark for the audiovisual industry, according to Almudena Maillo, Madrid's Councilor for Tourism. In 2024, 41 films, 53 series, 430 commercials and 496 other medium and large-scale projects (including music videos and television programs) were shot in the capital, according to data from the Madrid Film Office, a city agency. Figures for the last five years show a stability in the number of production companies interested in filming in the streets of the Spanish capital."
On Pelayo street in Chueca a film shoot on June 17-18 drew more than 40 people along 100 meters of sidewalk with actors, spotlights and passersby observing. Madrid recorded 1,020 shoots in 2024, a nearly 10% increase over the previous year, including 41 films, 53 series, 430 commercials and 496 other medium and large projects. The Madrid Film Office reports that Madrid hosts 29% of Spain's 2,881 active audiovisual companies. The city aims to consolidate its role as an audiovisual benchmark and is on track to surpass pre-Covid figures. Historic location shoots include Pedro Almodóvar's Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and Alejandro Amenábar's Open Your Eyes.
