Louis Black grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey, falling in love with film at an early age. He pursued English and film studies at college, ultimately finding success in Austin, Texas. He founded The Austin Chronicle to support the creative community with quality journalism. In 1986, he co-created South by Southwest (SXSW), originally intended as a small regional music event. The event unexpectedly grew into a major cultural festival, reflecting the vibrant local talent and innovation.
