Letterboxd Announces New "Video Store" VOD Service Embedded Inside Letterboxd
"For movie users always seeking hidden gems, movie-focused social media platform Letterboxd is introducing a new service: The Letterboxd Video Store, which will allow users to not just log their interest in movies, but rent them on VOD through the app. "This isn't a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join the conversation with our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists," the announcement post explains."
"Letterboxd is promising a curated experience, akin to the "Employee Picks" section at an old-school real-life video store, but fueled by Letterboxd users. The types of movies that the service will offer includes film festival selections that do not have distribution, new restorations, and "limited-time drops of sneak peeks and unreleased gems (only here for a short time)." Rentals will be viewable on the web, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast and Airplay, with additional smart TV apps in the works."
Letterboxd is launching Letterboxd Video Store, a service that lets users rent VOD movies through the app rather than only logging interest. The service is not subscription-based and offers pay-per-rental access with no lock-in or paywall. Curated selections will include festival films lacking distribution, new restorations, and limited-time drops of sneak peeks and unreleased titles. Rentals will stream on web, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast and AirPlay, with additional smart TV apps planned. Letterboxd notes there are no late fees for rentals and plans to launch in early December. Noted Letterboxd user Charli XCX is mentioned.
