Josh Gad Says Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Book of Mormon' Was Originally Going to Be an Animated Film
Briefly

Before it became a Broadway smash hit, The Book of Mormon could have gone animated. Josh Gad revealed on a podcast that co-writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone were initially interested in making it an animated film, similar to Team America: World Police. However, after a live reading, they pivoted to a theatrical production. Gad reflected on how the decision to switch formats came about, marking a significant moment in the show's development.
Gad shared that when he was approached by Bobby Lopez to join the project, he was coming off Avenue Q and was eager to be part of something new. He said, "My wife still to this day, bashes me, Gad said of missing out on the Emmy-winning sitcom. Gad later admitted that his own failed sitcom, 1600 Penn, was an attempt to get out of his Book of Mormon contract, acknowledging his miscalculation in career choices.
The Book of Mormon found its footing after an initial live reading showcased its potential. Gad noted, "After the script reading, it became evident that a theatrical approach would allow the story to resonate more deeply with audiences. I'll be it, people were definitely taken aback and shocked, and they had a huddle to decide to pursue the Broadway route. This decision ultimately led to the creation of one of the most acclaimed musicals of its time.
Despite the challenges faced, including Gad's decision to forgo a role in Modern Family, he emphasized his commitment to The Book of Mormon and the experience it offered. He reflected on his journey, saying, "It was a three-year runway before the show opened on Broadway, and during that time, I truly realized I was part of something groundbreaking. I had no idea then just how impactful this production would be."
