Josef Mengele performed sadistic experiments on Jewish people at Auschwitz, where more than one million were murdered. After World War II, Mengele evaded capture in Germany and fled to Argentina with help from former SS members and sympathizers. The story is based on Olivier Guez's 2017 book and debuted at Cannes. The narrative contrasts high-profile prosecutions like Eichmann's with thousands who escaped with state and collaborator support, and shows how money, connections and disguise enabled Mengele's evasion.
