Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington Detail Rebuilding Soundtrack, Share New Songs
"His music is rooted firmly in all the folkloric traditions I love but not at all nostalgic. And that was much like the film we were making; a story in which the past is all around but firmly of the here and now. And since so much of his music has no lyrics, Jake already understood the challenge of telling a story through instrumentation alone."
"I think Max had a suspicion that we'd be able to improvise a couple of new pieces in the room, while watching the picture, which turned out to be true. Some of our favorite cues were written that way-in the room while watching the picture."
Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington collaborated on the original score for Rebuilding, marking their first original film score together. The soundtrack is scheduled for release on November 14 via Fat Possum, aligning with the film's New York theatrical opening. Two selections, "Contemplating the Moon" and "Glow in the Dark," have been released in advance. Much of the music is instrumental and draws from folkloric traditions while maintaining a contemporary, non-nostalgic cinematic feel. Several cues were improvised while watching the picture, producing some favorite pieces. Elkington has produced Fussell's recent albums and issued a solo album earlier in the year. Rebuilding follows a cowboy rebuilding his life after a wildfire and features Josh O'Connor, Lily LaToree, Meghann Fahy, Kali Reis, and Amy Madigan.
