"I sent it to them to produce, and Margot luckily asked if she might play Cathy, said Fennell in conversation at the BFI Southbank in London. I was very nervous to ask her, because I think we have a different relationship, and I didn't want to put her on the spot, she said. I was like: Do I go for it?' No, I didn't. Of course I didn't, because she's braver than me. She asked me."
"Robbie, 35, will play Catherine Earnshaw who is written to be in her late teens in the original novel. The casting of Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff has also been criticised. In the book, the character is described by Bronte to be of Gypsy and Lascar (South Asian) descent, which accounts for the prejudice against the him in the book. However Fennell defended her decision. I can't adapt the book as it is but I can approximate the way it made me feel, she said."
Margot Robbie requested the lead role of Cathy in the Wuthering Heights adaptation after reading the script, and LuckyChap Entertainment produced the film. Emerald Fennell cast Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. The casting drew scepticism for departing from Emily Brontë's 1847 novel, particularly regarding Heathcliff's Brontë-described Gypsy and Lascar (South Asian) descent and the novel's themes of prejudice. Fennell framed the adaptation as an approximation of the novel's emotional impact rather than a literal recreation. The production premiered 5 February in Leicester Square and releases in UK cinemas on 13 February.
