"Duke & Roya" is a powerful play by Charles Randolph-Wright focusing on Duke, a Black hip-hop artist, visiting Afghanistan to entertain troops. He meets Roya, an Afghan interpreter who defies gender norms in a society constrained by Taliban rule. The storyline reveals the complex realities of Afghan life, particularly the restrictions faced by women. Duke's desire to explore beyond the military base leads to an incident with profound implications. The play ultimately emphasizes the choices individuals make and their long-lasting impacts in a region fraught with danger and oppression.
Roya finds a way to sneak him out and takes him to a tea house, a place where only men can enter. Roya goes disguised as a man.
Randolph-Wright does a magnificent job of laying out clearly what the people of Afghanistan had to go through under the Taliban and how even the native people who work on the U.S. military base are not above suspicion.
