Disney Has Announced A Live-Action 'Moana' With Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Returning As Maui
""We are here on the island of O'ahu, where I did a lot of growing up. As you know, Hawai'i means so much to my family and me,""
""The Pacific islands and their cultures inspired a very special story. One that you all know very well. And that story is ... drumroll please ... Moana!""
""We found so much inspiration for Maui in the mana and the presence of my late grandfather, the legendary High Chief Peter Maivia," Johnson said."
Disney is producing a live-action adaptation of Moana featuring Catherine Laga'aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui with both voice and physical presence. The one-minute teaser trailer shows Laga'aia singing "I am Moana," the Kakamora tribe, island scenery, and a brief glimpse of Maui without revealing his face. John Tui plays Chief Tui, Frankie Adams portrays Moana's mother Sina, and Rena Owen appears as Gramma Tala. Production has spanned roughly two years, with creative ties to O'ahu and Pacific island cultures and inspiration for Maui drawn from High Chief Peter Maivia. Further details and an extended trailer are expected later.
