"Was there any better back-to-back streak of movies from a director than Rob Reiner in the 1980s? First "Stand by Me" then "The Princess Bride" and "When Harry Met Sally...," each film was uniquely wonderful, worthy or rewatching until the VHS tape went all streaky. To mark Reiner's untimely death this winter, the New Parkway Theater in Oakland is holding a day-long marathon of his works on Jan. 25."
""Rob Reiner's movies were a common social background for all of us who were alive and aware in the '80s and early '90s," the organizers write. "It might have been the last time that Americans all watched the same movies together (now our media landscape is much more fractured). We can get together - not for one last time, but hopefully the first of many times!""
"Starting Sunday morning, the event will feature some of his best-loved movies like "Misery" and "This Is Spinal Tap" - and includes one that's not usually available for streaming, John Cusack road-trip comedy "The Sure Thing." Tickets are available both for individual films or for the whole marathon (with special themed meals). Orinda Theatre is showing "When Harry Met Sally..." on Feb. 19, and the Roxie in San Francisco the same on Feb. 1."
Rob Reiner directed several widely loved 1980s films including Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally, celebrated for their enduring rewatchability. A day-long marathon of Reiner's films will be held Jan. 25 at the New Parkway Theater in Oakland to mark his untimely death this winter. The marathon begins Sunday morning and will screen favorites such as Misery, This Is Spinal Tap, and the less-streamed The Sure Thing. Tickets are available for individual films or a full marathon pass (with an optional themed-meal upgrade). Additional single screenings of When Harry Met Sally will play at the Orinda Theatre and the Roxie.
