Castro Theatre Announces Initial Film Schedule for 2026 | KQED
"When operation of San Francisco's Castro Theatre transferred to the live music promotion company Another Planet Entertainment in 2022, film fans who'd called the theater home were outraged. Why would anyone transform one of the Bay Area's last remaining movie palaces, they asked, into yet another concert venue?"
"Special one-off screenings at the Castro include A Deeper Love: The Story of Miss Peppermint (with Peppermint in person, April 1), The Last Black Man in San Francisco (with writer and director Joe Talbot in person, April 12), and a 25th anniversary screening of Hedwig & the Angry Inch in 35mm (with John Cameron Mitchell in person, July 17)."
"Another Planet quickly promised that the Castro would still host film, and a long saga ensued over renovation plans involving multi-level tiers, telescoping platforms and removable seating. Meanwhile, some smaller film festival organizers reported, and Another Planet confirmed, that the cost to rent the Castro for a film festival had increased."
"After the SF Silent Film Festival makes its return to the Castro on May 6-10, 2026, Frameline will take up residency from June 17-27."
Operation of the Castro Theatre transferred to Another Planet Entertainment in 2022, prompting outrage from long-time film patrons. Another Planet pledged to continue film programming while initiating an extensive, over-budget renovation that includes multi-level tiers, telescoping platforms and removable seating. The company announced concert dates and said a full movie calendar will be posted in January with repertory screenings, sing-alongs, 35mm and 70mm presentations and discounted student and senior tickets. Rental costs for film festivals have increased. The venue confirmed a slate of film events for 2026, including the SF Silent Film Festival (May 6-10) and Frameline residency (June 17-27).
