ByteDance backpedals after Seedance 2.0 turned Hollywood icons into AI "clip art"
""ByteDance's virtual smash-and-grab of Disney's IP is willful, pervasive, and totally unacceptable,""
""We cannot overlook a situation in which content is being used without the copyright holder's permission,""
""respects intellectual property rights" and has "heard the concerns regarding Seedance 2.0.""
""free public domain clip art,""
ByteDance is rushing to add safeguards to block Seedance 2.0 from generating iconic characters and deepfaking celebrities after major studios raised objections. Disney and Paramount Skydance sent cease-and-desist letters alleging vast and blatant infringement and widespread social media sharing of AI videos featuring characters like Spider-Man, Darth Vader, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Disney accused Seedance of hijacking characters and treating them like free public domain clip art. Paramount Skydance said outputs are often indistinguishable visually and audibly from original characters. Japan's AI minister opened a probe to protect anime and manga. ByteDance said it respects intellectual property rights and is strengthening safeguards.
