"Artists are free to exercise their right of free speech in whatever way they choose, Tuttle said. Artists should not be expected to comment on all broader debates about a festival's previous or current practices over which they have no control. Nor should they be expected to speak on every political issue raised to them unless they want to."

Berlinale defended its filmmakers, jury and president Wim Wenders after a media storm at the festival's opening. Wim Wenders said movies can change the world but not in a political way and that filmmakers must stay out of politics. Producer Ewa Puszczynska called questions about German support for Israel complicated and said, 'We cannot be responsible for what their decision would be to support Israel or the decision to support Palestine.' Author Arundhati Roy withdrew, called the comments unconscionable and said silencing political art shuts down conversation about an unfolding crime against humanity. Tricia Tuttle said artists can choose whether to speak on political issues and should not be expected to address all festival practices.
