Eddington portrays a small New Mexico town in late May 2020, depicting the conflict over pandemic policies. Pedro Pascal plays the mayor advocating for health measures, while Joaquin Phoenix’s sheriff represents personal choice. The film reflects the cultural wars surrounding safety versus freedom, capturing community fractures intensified by COVID lockdowns. Ari Aster, who wrote and directed, aims to portray all perspectives with empathy, exploring rising tensions leading to potential violence amidst societal unrest and disinformation, ultimately illustrating a fractured sense of reality among the townspeople.
A big part of the project for me was to pull back as far as I could and include as many voices as I could that are a part of this cacophony.
That became the center of the culture wars in this country, where you had people arguing for public health and safety, and then you had people arguing for personal freedoms.
It's about a bunch of people living in different realities who are unreachable to each other. It pushes them into deeper convictions and paranoia.
I think that violence is basically the logical next step to a lot of what has been happening.
