Rotten Tomatoes' new update aims to combat "review-bombing" of LGBTQ+ films by only allowing reviews from those who have purchased tickets, creating a more authentic audience representation.
In the press release, Rotten Tomatoes states, "In order to provide a more accurate reflection of critical and audience sentiment, the thresholds for when Tomatometer and Popcornmeter scores populate will now be based on domestic box office projections."
The introduction of the "Verified Hot" rating for audience reviews will highlight movies achieving high scores among verified ticket purchasers, similar to the "Certified Fresh" distinction for critics.
By implementing these changes, Rotten Tomatoes hopes to diminish negative influences on audience scores and promote a true reflection of film reception among real viewers.
