"During the pandemic, I took a couple of ad hoc philosophy courses from the Brooklyn Institute of Social Research on Hannah Arendt, Kierkegaard, Nietszche, and [the] Stoics,"
"how to live morally in what often feels like an immoral world."
"I think it's like songwriting. Some songs come out immediately, and some songs take months and months or years and years to get right."
After the Hunt is a MeToo-inspired psychological thriller set in a Yale philosophy department. The screenplay originated from pandemic-era continuing education philosophy classes covering Hannah Arendt, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and the Stoics. Stoic concepts and discussions of Foucault's panopticon and Freud's misogyny are used to expose characters' base desires beneath academic discourse. The film is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri. A subsequent adaptation is being developed with new research, and the creative process is compared to songwriting, with some projects emerging quickly and others evolving over long periods.
