1,900 Film Industry Figures Pledge Not to Work with Israeli Institutions "Complicit" in Gaza "Carnage"
"The world's highest court, the International Court of Justice, has ruled that there is a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza, and that Israel's occupation and apartheid against Palestinians are unlawful. Standing for equality, justice, and freedom for all people is a profound moral duty that none of us can ignore. So too, we must speak out now against the harm done to the Palestinian people."
"Published by the organization Film Workers for Palestine on Monday, the pledge includes film screenings, festivals, cinemas, broadcasters, and production companies. It goes on to define "complicity" as "whitewashing or justifying genocide and apartheid, and/or partnering with the government committing them." According to the FAQ, this includes major film festivals such as Jerusalem Film Festival, Haifa International Film Festival, Docaviv, and TLVfest."
More than 1,900 actors, directors, and other film and TV professionals signed a pledge refusing work with Israeli film institutions considered complicit in the Gaza "genocide and apartheid" against the Palestinian people. High-profile signatories include Ayo Edebiri, Mark Ruffalo, Olivia Colman, Tilda Swinton, Javier Bardem, Yorgos Lanthimos, Ava DuVernay, Adam McKay, Joshua Oppenheimer, and Boots Riley. Film Workers for Palestine published the pledge and defined "complicity" as whitewashing or justifying genocide and apartheid, and/or partnering with the government committing them. The pledge covers screenings, festivals, cinemas, broadcasters, and production companies and names several major Israeli festivals as examples.
