These Photos Capture the Vibrant Spirit of Nepal's Youth Culture
"I was very conscious of working from a diasporic perspective. I wanted to restrain myself from building my own narrative. It is important to allow people to present themselves in their own terms. What I was doing was simply recording how [youth culture] was evolving."
"As someone of Nepalese descent but having grown up predominantly in the UK, I've always wanted to understand and connect with what the youth were up to over there."
"Inspired by Sareena Rai, an iconic figure from the Nepalese punk scene of the early 2000s, Thapa brought a suitcase of clothes by British Nepalese designers to style the skaters."
Tirtha Rabin Lawati and stylist Sam Thapa returned to Nepal to document changing youth culture through their project, Where We Meet. Lawati aimed to avoid personal nostalgia, focusing instead on allowing youth to present themselves authentically. Thapa, of Nepalese descent but raised in the UK, sought to connect with Nepalese youth. Their work includes two series: Girls Skate Nepal, showcasing young girls in Kathmandu redefining skate culture, and Jamkabhet, exploring underground music and youth communities. Thapa's preparation included reaching out to local groups and bringing clothes from British Nepalese designers to style the skaters.
