Amanda Watkins and Karen Brooks created a pop-up shop in Brentwood to alleviate the financial burden of prom outfits, following their own experiences as parents. Initially planned as a one-day event, it was extended to four days due to overwhelming demand. They gathered over 600 donated dresses, suits, and shoes, enabling local families to secure prom outfits without cost. Feedback indicated that many children could only attend prom thanks to the pop-up, showcasing its emotional and community impact. Plans for next year's event are underway as they aim to reach even more families in need.
When Amanda first mentioned running a prom pop-up, I loved the idea and knew there would be plenty of people with pre-loved dresses in their lofts and wardrobes.
I was overwhelmed by the number of parents and carers who said that without being able to get their outfit for free at the pop-up, the child would simply not have been going to prom.
